Epping (0) 1 Poole (pen) 60
Enfield Town (2) 2 Alleyne 3; Allen 5

Match Report by Peter Coath, Enfield Town FC Press Officer

Enfield Town made it safely through to the first cup-final of their short history this afternoon despite a disjointed second half performance against a spirited Epping side. Town made the perfect start to the game and raced into a two goal lead within 5 minutes. First, Daniel Alleyne fired home from the edge of the box after good work by Daniel Clarke on 3 minutes, followed quickly by David Allen tapping in from close range after the home defence failed to deal with Clarke's run and cross.

Epping started to claw their way back into the game but apart from winning a corner or two they did very little to trouble the Enfield Town goal. The second half was a different story though and Epping got off to a good start, winning 5 corners in the first 7 minutes. Town regained their feet to seriously threaten the Epping goal on 53 minutes but Clarke saw the ball hacked from the line by Lee Webber.

Epping pulled a goal back on the hour mark, when Bradley Brotherton was penalised for a foul inside the box. Steve Poole sent Andy Hall the wrong way and suddenly we had a real game on our hands. Epping were now creating chances and Town had to suffer 15 minutes of pressure before managing to again impose some authority on the game. Rudi Hall saw a header go wide on 83 minutes and Mathew Negus had a shot blocked and cleared on 86 minutes.

Epping had a late chance to save the game when Brotherton under-hit a back pass and had to thank Andy Hall for saving the situation. Town tried to play keep-ball for the closing minutes of the match but Epping did mount one last serious attempt on goal only to be thwarted by a tight offside decision. To summarise, it wasn't the best of performances from Enfield Town this afternoon but their safe passage was assured and they now find themselves through to a cup final after only eight short months of existence.

Enfield Town: A Hall, Allen (Morris 32), Negus, Snowden (Harding 45), Brotherton, G Hall, St Hilaire, Watson, Clarke, Antoine (R Hall 63), Alleyne.

(Middlesex Senior Cup Semi Final) 5th March 2002

Hendon (0) 1 Butler 75
Enfield Town (0) 0

Match Report by Peter Coath, Enfield Town FC Press Officer

One cup dream came to an end tonight, as Enfield Town finally met their match in this season's Senior County Cup. Ryman Premier Hendon treated their opponents seriously and fielded a strong side. Town welcomed back John Ridout to the starting line-up and Micky Henderson returned from suspension to a place on the bench. Hendon had the better of the opening exchanges and Andy Hall, in the Town goal, was kept busy.

Town gradually adjusted to the tempo though and began to create some chances. Alleyne had a shot deflected for a corner on 27 minutes and Town kept Hendon pinned back for a short spell. Hendon keeper David Hook remained well protected but did have to race from goal to clear the danger on 41 minutes as Clarke advanced. Ricky Antoine saw a shot fly just wide on the stroke of half time.

Town started well in the second half and the first real action saw Martin St Hilaire loop a shot over the bar following a corner from Antoine. Graeme Hall cleared well from in front of the Town goal on 60 minutes as Hendon began to take control but John Ridout saw a header cleared from the goal line minutes later as Town fought back. The game changed completely on 75 minutes, after Graeme Hall was booked for a rather innocuous foul. From the resultant free kick Steve Butler rose high above the defence to head home the opening goal.

David Allen was booked two minutes later for a late tackle but worse was to follow on 81 minutes when Town's Bradley Brotherton and Hendon's Dale Binns were both booked for their part in starting a brawl. David Allen was then shown a red card after the Referee consulted his assistant, who had obviously spotted something in all the confusion.

Hendon squandered a golden chance to double their lead on 86 minutes when Andy Hall saved a penalty kick, awarded after a challenge from Brotherton was deemed a foul. Another skirmish started deep into time added on but the Referee calmed things down and the game finished without any further trouble. Hendon now face Northwood in the final at Hayes on April Fools Day, while Enfield Town can look back on their first ever County Cup campaign with heads held high.

Enfield Town; A Hall, Allen, Negus, Snowden, Brotherton, G Hall (Henderson 81), Ridout, Antoine (Harding 55), Clarke, St Hilaire (Morris 88), Alleyne. Unused subs; Etumnun, Poole.

Match Report by Peter Coath, Enfield Town FC Press Officer

It was a case of two points dropped and a missed opportunity to make up ground on league leaders Leyton tonight as Enfield Town stuttered to a goal-less draw at Catons Lane. The first half was a tense affair, with the home team playing down the slope and creating several half chances, while Enfield Town's strike duo of Daniel Clarke and Daniel Alleyne came under close guard from the home defence and found their freedom restricted.

Langer found himself through on two occasions but without any hint of accuracy in his shooting the Enfield Town goal was not seriously threatened. For the visitors, Martin St Hilaire was heavily involved in the midfield battle and when one long run on goal was halted by a foul 'Saint' took exception and was booked for retaliation, along with Bisset for the home side. This summed up the first forty-five minutes quite aptly.

It was all change after the break with the visitors charging down the hill and making inroads on the previously solid home defence. Alleyne and Clarke were now causing problems and giving the home defence cause for concern. For all their possession though, the visitors couldn't make the breakthrough and they had a lucky escape on 61 minutes when keeper Andy Hall saw a shot from a direct free kick rebound off the crossbar to safety.Enfield Town upped the tempo after that and the introduction of debut boy James Bunn livened things up. The pressure mounted late in the game but the home defence did their job well in restricting the visitors to few clear cut chances. Ronnie Watson came the closest to breaking the deadlock on 85 minutes when his superb header from a Bunn corner was well saved by Harman.

The final whistle was greeted with cheers from the home team, strongly suggesting that the one point was more than enough for them, while Enfield Town went home regretting the two points dropped. Manager Jim Chandler admitted afterwards that he had expected a better performance from his team tonight and was certainly annoyed at their failure to take maximum points from the game. In fairness though, the Saffron Walden defence did their job well and deserved a share of the spoils.

Enfield Town; A Hall, Allen, Morris, (Bunn 70), Snowden, Brotherton, G Hall, Harding (Watson 63), R Hall, Clarke, St Hilaire, Alleyne. Unused sub; Antoine.

(League Cup Semi Final 1st Leg) 15th March 2002

Stansted (1) 1 Murphy 20
Enfield Town (0) 0

Match Report by Peter Coath, Enfield Town FC Press Officer

It was another blank day for the Enfield Town strike-force as they failed to overcome determined opposition at Hargrave Park this afternoon. After an early flurry of activity Town had Graeme Hall and Daniel Alleyne both booked for fouls. Stansted took the lead on 20 minutes when Tony Murphy sneaked in at the far post to convert a free-kick.

Town then mounted some pressure on the home side but the closest they came to a goal was on 34 minutes when Rudi Hall got in a header which fell into the keeper's arms. Stansted mounted a few counter-attacks but apart from a Przezdziecki shot that skidded wide on 37 minutes they amounted to nothing.

The second half began in similar fashion, with Town now playing down the slope and having better possession. Rudi Hall shot over on 58 minutes and then Stansted had a lucky escape on 67 minutes when Bradley Brotherton unleashed a screamer of a shot following a free-kick, only for the ball to rebound to safety off John Ridout's head.

Daniel Clarke found himself under the close scrutiny of the home defence all afternoon but managed to shake himself free on 74 minutes to get in a dangerous low cross, there being nobody in position to deliver the killer blow though. Stansted survived more pressure on 76 minutes when both Ridout and Rudi Hall had shots blocked from close range. Mercer, for the home team, went on a solo run on 84 minutes but Andy Hall pulled off a fine save.

The closing stages saw Town kept at bay by Stansted. The second leg promises to be just as close, with both teams still in with an excellent chance of making it through to the final.
